What I have learned from being a teacher

What I have learned from being a teacher, Transatlantic Today

I am a teacher. I’m an employee at the oldest profession. I teach elementary school kids music lessons for my day job and I have noticed that many children can be disruptive and very rude.

However, I have learned to be a lot more patient with children and people in general. I have taught many kids music and theory and I also teach Adobe Audition for adults. Once you’ve read this article, you will realize why teachers want to teach other people.

I remember teaching one of my guitar classes and I had the whole class pinky-promise me that they would behave, pay attention and practice their instruments so that they could finish strong in the last forthcoming class. They all agreed to the pinky-promise and I left for the day. When I came back to the school the next week, the kids disappointed me and didn’t seem to pay attention and some of them didn’t even want to play. To their credit, they may have been tired and it was probably a very long day.

Some of the class seemed upset that I was disappointed in their performance. However, there was one little girl in my class that was crying and I didn’t understand why. When I asked her what was wrong, she responded, “I’m sorry I broke your pinky-promise Mr. Richard.”

My heart completely melted and I realized that that little girl and students like her are why I want to teach more people and spread the knowledge I have far and wide. The beauty of that class was that I enjoyed going to that class the most. The students didn’t know everything about guitar and they may not have always paid attention, but I enjoyed the energy that they gave and the fact that even if they weren’t paying attention, they would put a smile on my face.

I felt a joy that only a teacher or parent could feel when talking with children. That little girl who was crying taught me a lesson that every student is not disruptive and wants to learn and it was only fair that I had to be patient in that sentiment and I knew that I didn’t have all of the answers and that I was going to inevitably make mistakes, as well.

If I was going to succeed as a teacher, I knew that I had to foster the kid’s imagination while implementing discipline and responsibility to the kids so that they know better and learn something from the class that I’m teaching.

I have never been more honored to teach a class than them and I would do it again in a heartbeat and I say that because I know that they care deep down inside even if they goof off.

I learned to be a better model for the children and, in the process, be a better man myself when dealing with younger people. I have a power and a responsibility to these children and it’s up to me to mold them into the adults that they will become in the future.
