US, Japan Tightening Military Bond, Pacific Fleet Admiral Says

USA (Washington Insider Magazine)—The U.S. and Japan are deepening military ties as part of the Biden administration’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, highlighted efforts to modernize their military relationship in response to China’s growing influence in the region. At the WEST 2024 conference, Paparo emphasized closer integration of defense industrial bases, operations, and headquarters.

Recent events, such as the Keen Edge 24 exercise, showcased Japan’s new defense strategies, including missile defense and counterstrike capabilities. These efforts reflect Japan’s increasing missile threats from China and North Korea.

Paparo also noted that Japan is not only enhancing its military with foreign military sales, including 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles, but is also building weapons for the U.S., such as the Patriot air defense system. These moves highlight growing defense collaboration as the two nations align more closely to counter regional security challenges.
