President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) as his national security adviser, tapping the Green Beret veteran and lawmaker for a key role in his administration.
Rep. Mike Waltz, a veteran of the U.S. Army Special Forces with extensive experience in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa, has been selected by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as national security adviser, sources familiar with the decision confirmed. Waltz, who has represented Florida’s 6th congressional district since 2019, is a member of the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, and Intelligence committees in the House of Representatives.
Waltz’s foreign policy views
Waltz is known for his hawkish stance on China, having served on the House’s China Task Force. He has repeatedly argued that the U.S. is unprepared for potential conflict in the region, calling for a more assertive approach to Chinese aggression. In addition to his focus on China, Waltz has been a vocal critic of U.S. aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia, suggesting that the U.S. holds leverage over Russian President Vladimir Putin and could push for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
No senate confirmation is needed
The role of national security adviser does not require Senate confirmation, allowing Waltz to step directly into the position once the new administration begins. Waltz’s appointment adds to a growing list of Republicans in prominent positions in Trump’s upcoming administration, following the selection of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
As Trump continues to announce key members of his administration, Waltz’s extensive military background and foreign policy expertise are expected to shape his approach to national security in a new Trump administration.
