(Washington Insider Magazine) – The teenager turned himself in with his mother to detectives at a Brooklyn police station for the stabbing death of Nysheem Wright, who intervened in the fight at Coney Island to help her friend.
A 13-Year-Old Boy Has Been Charged
A 13-year-old boy has been charged with the fatal stabbing of a Coney Island youth after he intervened in a fight between girls, authorities said Monday.
The minor turned himself in with his mother to investigators at the Brooklyn 60th Precinct police station on Sunday. Two other teenagers, ages 14 and 15, have also reportedly turned themselves in to police and face charges of assault and gang assault.
The New York Police Department did not release the names of any of the suspects because they are minors.
Officers said the three youths confronted Nysheem Wright on the afternoon of January 20 in a Rite Aid parking lot on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island.
The victim, described by the chancellor of the city’s Education Department, David Banks, as a “cheerful leader,” was beaten and stabbed several times in the upper part of the body. Nysheem was taken in critical condition to Maimonides Medical Center, where he died the next day.
This crime would be the last unprovoked act of violence involving adolescents in the city.
“Our city suffers from these losses,” Banks said on his Twitter account. “We will stand with students and schools affected by violence this week as they grieve and we will work with all schools to help young people turn away from violence.”
The boy, who was a student at the K728 Liberation Diploma Plus secondary school, about a mile from the scene, was stabbed to death when he tried to help a girl he knew, his relatives explained.
“He’s not one to get into trouble, [he’s] pretty shy,” said his cousin, Miriam Wright. “I have never seen him get angry or anything. I’m still trying to process this.”
Authorities confirmed Monday that Nysheem intervened in the fight between the girls the day before she was killed.
