Arrest of Suspect

NYPD announced the arrest of suspects in two open Hispanic homicide cases in the Bronx.

On January 1 of this year, in what is considered the first homicide of 2023, former Dominican basketball player Sergio “Bidó” García was stabbed to death at age 63 in an apparent fight over a parking space on College Avenue near East 170th. Street, Claremont Village neighborhood.

Weeks later, Ira Shane, a 52-year-old ex-con, was arrested on suspicion of killing Garcia shortly before 4 a.m. of New Year’s Day. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon after a witness came forward to police.

Shane had already served time for an attempted murder. He has now been charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, the New York Post listed.

In addition, Leonard Thalease was arrested for the death of Miguel Rodríguez (27) in a park near Yankes Stadium, a case that had been open since last May.

According to NYPD Thalease, 40, shot Rodriguez in the head after arguing with him at Joyce Kilmer Park near E. 161st St. and Grand Concourse around 2 a.m. of May 14.

Thalease was charged with murder, manslaughter and weapons possession. He was also charged with assault for allegedly beating his 18-year-old stepdaughter on February 14, the Daily News reported.

The victim had no criminal record, but Thalease did, dating back to 2000, including various drug charges, police said. The reason for the fatal argument he had with Rodríguez in May is unclear.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
