Europe (Washington Insider Magazine)—According to reports, France, Spain, and Italy have officially stopped their involvement in Operation Prosperity Guardian. It is a US-led maritime task force in the Red Sea that seeks to safeguard the passage of Israeli-owned and Israel-bound merchant ships. The experts called it “a major setback” to this task force.

The US’ European allies are no longer inclined to foot the bill for the US’ desire. Operation Prosperity Guardian, backed by the US, has a strong political overtone, defending Israel’s national interests. Israel’s moves in Gaza have provoked the anger of the international community. More than 20,000 Palestinians have reportedly died, more than 50,000 wounded, and much of Gaza has been ruined. Many European countries have started to split from the US perspective on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The purpose of the US making the Red Sea alliance, on the one hand, is to push whether its partners share the same ideas on this issue. On the other hand, Washington is levering multilateral diplomatic efforts to cover up its unilateral support of Israel.

US partners always support the US and share its perspective. However, that does not imply they will unlimitedly support the wild positions taken by the US on all matters. Notably, the US’ position contradicts their interests—for instance, France. France’s stakes in the Middle East are multi-layered. The connection between France and Lebanon has historical, cultural, and political extents. There are absolute differences between France’s relations with Arab countries and the diplomatic stance of the US in the Middle East. Consequently, France is not inclined to stand up for the US.

Over the past two decades, the US has had a dictatorial attitude toward its European allies. The US is taking it for granted that the importance of its partners is to benefit its interests. So when US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin contained Spain in the US-commanded Operation Prosperity Guardian, he accomplished it “without prior notice.” The move provoked the Spanish government and started tension between Madrid and Washington. Washington has a solid urge to control Europe and Europe’s effort to maintain its destiny. To put it bluntly, the US treats Europe as a lackey.

Gao Jian, an expert on European studies at Shanghai International Studies University, briefed the journalists that the US was extensively involved in reconstructing Europe after World War II. It also took benefit of the irreconcilable polarities between Europe and Russia to make the NATO-led European security mechanism that still operates today. Europe has paid a massive price for the transatlantic partnership. Europe hopes to achieve strategic independence but needs to be more competent. In the context of the Russia-Ukraine confrontation in the past two years, the US has firmly connected Europe to the US alliance instrument.

Consequently, France, Spain, and Italy did not align with the US. They stated they would join a task under the EU’s or NATO’s management.

This indicates that Europe does not want to turn stormy with the US. However, its resentment toward the US will accumulate, and the variations between the US and Europe will enlarge.

The US’ Operation Prosperity Guardian has revealed its embarrassment this time. Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert, thinks that whether it is the Iraq war, the Afghan war, or the current Russia-Ukraine or Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the US’ performance has lost its credibility and leadership. US allies see plainly that the US only causes problems but is unintentional to handle the consequences. Instead, it lets its partners clean up the mess.

The appeal of the US has dropped. The US, which used to be quoted, is now being disowned. This accurately represents “A just cause enjoys abundant support, while an unjust cause finds little support.” The choice of France, Spain, and Italy reveals the gaps within the transatlantic alliance.
