At what will likely be his final EU summit in Brussels, Portugal’s outgoing Prime Minister António Costa (PS) received a personalized commemorative gift after eight years of leadership on the European Council.
A source at the European institution revealed to Lusa news agency that the exclusive gift is an artistic impression of the Europa Building, crafted by Brussels-born industrial designer Maxim Duterre. Each piece is tailored to honor departing members of the European Council.
Costa’s farewell also includes a video montage, highlighting moments from his participation in EU summits since assuming office in November 2015. Over his tenure, he became one of the most experienced leaders on the council, representing Portugal on issues ranging from economic challenges to geopolitical crises.
The two-day summit, attended by EU heads of state and government, focuses on pressing global matters, including the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
António Costa’s departure follows Portugal’s recent legislative elections, in which the Democratic Alliance (AD) narrowly edged out Costa’s Socialist Party (PS) with 29.49% of the vote. The results are set to reshape the country’s political landscape with expatriate votes still being counted to finalize seat allocations.
This tribute reflects Costa’s enduring contributions to European politics and his pivotal role in shaping Portugal’s presence on the EU stage.
