Maryland Authorities Uncover Large Arsenal of Ghost Guns

Police in Maryland are searching for Jerod Adam Taylor, a suspect who fled after authorities found an extensive collection of firearms, including illegal ghost guns, at his home. Taylor faces multiple charges related to illegal firearm possession.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office uncovered a large arsenal of weapons, including ghost guns, during a response to a domestic assault call in Lexington Park. Despite being legally prohibited from owning firearms due to previous convictions, Taylor had 80 firearms in his home, including 3D-printed, untraceable guns. Authorities also seized over 1,300 rounds of ammunition, body armor, and 3D printers.

What are Ghost Guns?

Ghost guns are firearms made from parts that can be purchased online, including kits for assembly and 3D-printed components. They are often untraceable because they lack serial numbers, making them increasingly common at crime scenes.

Jerod Adam Taylor, 39, faces multiple charges including illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and assault weapons, as well as second-degree assault. Authorities continue to search for him after he fled the scene.

Rising Concerns Over Ghost Guns

The use of ghost guns has surged in recent years, with the Biden administration reporting an increase in crimes involving these firearms. In 2021, law enforcement agencies found over 19,000 ghost guns at crime scenes. The administration has since tightened regulations, requiring serial numbers on ghost gun kits and background checks for purchasers. However, the regulation is facing legal challenges, with the Supreme Court expected to rule on its validity next year.

Advocacy groups and ghost gun manufacturers have challenged the Biden administration’s regulations, arguing that kits are parts, not weapons, and thus should not be subject to the same regulations. The Supreme Court is expected to make a decision on this matter in the coming year.
