(Washington Insider Magazine) -On Tuesday, the United States Senate voted in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act in a historic marriage vote. This legislation paves the ground in protecting the rights of same-sex marriages and the rights of interracial marriages nationwide.
The United States Senate passed legislation via a marriage vote for the Respect for Marriage Act with a final vote of 62-37, 60 votes being the needed number for passing. All Democrats and 12 Republicans voted in favor of the new legislation and achieved a bipartisan agreement. Efforts to protect the marriage rights of the LGBTQI+ and interracial community remained supported by the same members of Congress who voted to advance legislation of the bill in early November.
A full list of those who have voted have been published and shared on social media.
What happens next for the historic marriage vote?
The legislation will need to be approved by the House of Representatives before President Joe Biden is able to sign it into law. It is expected to move forward to President Biden’s desk as early as next week. It has already been voted on by the Senate.
The bill gained large support from Democrats as well as Republicans. In fact, the growing support for equality in our nation swayed some GOP members from deep red states to vote in favor of the legislation without prejudice.
The Respect for Marriage Act will not force all states to legalize same-sex marriage, but it will raise a universal recognition of same-sex marriage, regardless of what state the original declaration of marriage was signed.
Can the supreme court overturn the latest same-sex marriage vote?
It is possible the Supreme Court could overturn the legalization of same-sex marriage which was nationally established in 2015 under the Obergefell v.Hodges decision. As a result, individual states could ban approving further same-sex marriage certificates. However, the state restricting marriages of the LGBTQI+ community would be held to legislation that recognizes same-sex marriages and interracial marriages issued from another state.
It is evident from the support the Respect for Marriage Act received, Congress is listening to the LGBTQI+ and Interracial communities by supporting the need for marital equal rights. As religious liberties are securely protected within this new legislation, the sanctification of love and acceptance for our nation favored the passing of this bill with nonpartisan votes.
