Rep. Jim Jordan and House Republicans push to preserve records and potentially investigate special counsel Jack Smith’s work.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, stated Sunday that he and his fellow House Republicans are “not taking anything off the table” regarding the investigation of special counsel Jack Smith’s handling of two federal investigations into President-elect Donald Trump.

Why is Jordan questioning the investigation?

Jordan emphasized the need for transparency, telling CNN’s “State of the Union,” “We want the facts.” His comments followed Smith and the Justice Department initiating the process of winding down investigations into Trump, who was projected to win the presidential election last week.

“We assume there’s going to be some report. But all we’re saying is, ‘preserve everything,’ so we, the Congress, who have a constitutional duty to do oversight, can see everything,”

Jordan added.

Will Jordan call Smith to testify?

When asked repeatedly whether he would call Smith to testify, Jordan declined to provide a direct answer, stating,

“Maybe that’s been the norm, but we’re not taking anything off the table. I’m not saying for sure, but we want the information.”

What actions have Jordan and Loudermilk taken?

On Friday, Jordan and Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., sent a letter to Smith’s office urging the preservation of all records and materials related to the investigations into Trump. The letter raised concerns that Smith’s office might attempt to destroy or withhold relevant records after Trump’s decisive victory in the election.

What was the basis for Jordan’s concerns?

“We do want the facts, and that’s why we sent the letter. Mr. Loudermilk and myself sent the letter saying, ‘Hey, Mr. Smith, preserve this information,’”

Jordan explained during his CNN interview.

Could Jordan’s position change if the House shifts control?

Jordan currently holds the position of chair of the House Judiciary Committee, but the control of the House is still uncertain, as NBC News has not yet projected the results of several contested districts. If Democrats manage to flip the House, Jordan may lose his role as chair.

What is the status of Smith’s investigation into Trump?

On Friday, Smith began winding down his criminal investigation into Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Additionally, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan granted a pause on the case, providing Smith nearly a month to outline his next steps. The Justice Department’s policy typically prevents the prosecution of sitting presidents.
