Jamaica (Washington Insider Magazine)— Following Cabinet talks on Monday, Jamaica officially recognized the State of Palestine and called for an urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, where Israel’s offensive has killed over 34,000 Palestinians since October.
“Jamaica continues to push for a two-state solution as the only realistic alternative for resolving the longstanding [Israeli-Palestinian] conflict. By doing this, Jamaica boosts advocacy for a peaceful solution, according to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith.
Strengthening the Peaceful Solution
Kamina Johnson Smith, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, assured in a statement released in the last few hours that with this step, Jamaica strengthens its defense towards a peaceful solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The head of diplomacy also points out that the decision is consistent with Jamaica’s “strong commitment” to the United Nations Charter’s principles, which indicates peaceful coexistence between States and the right of peoples to self-determination.
Regarding the ongoing Israeli offensive, Smith asserted Jamaica’s support for a ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, and the provision of humanitarian aid to the Gaza population.
Regional Diplomatic Engagement
According to Elnuevodiario, “Jamaica continues to support all efforts to reduce tensions and establish lasting peace in the region, imploring all parties to consider the dire consequences of further conflict and commit to diplomatic solutions that ensure the security and sovereignty of all.” he added.
Jamaica is the second Caribbean Community (Caricom) country to proclaim recognition of the State of Palestine in the recent week, following Barbados, which did so in support of a two-state solution.
