Baghdad, Iraq  (Washington Insider Magazine)— Iraq announced the launch of a new power line connecting with Jordan, aiming to diversify energy sources and mitigate chronic power outages. The 340-kilometer (210-mile) line will initially deliver 40 megawatts (MW) to the Al-Rutbah border area, with plans to expand its capacity to 150 MW and eventually 500 MW, benefiting large parts of Anbar province.

Strategic Move Amid Chronic Power Shortages

Despite holding vast oil reserves, Iraq faces rolling blackouts lasting up to 10 hours daily, especially during the scorching summer months when temperatures soar to 50°C (122°F). Many households rely on neighborhood generators as backup power sources.

Historically, Iraq has depended heavily on gas and electricity imports from Iran, which are closely monitored by the United States to ensure compliance with sanctions on Tehran. However, disruptions from Iran due to nonpayment have heightened the urgency to diversify Iraq’s energy portfolio.

Electricity Ministry’s Vision

The new project with Jordan marks a pivotal step in addressing Iraq’s energy challenges. According to the Electricity Ministry, the power line will officially begin operations on Saturday, providing immediate relief to border communities and gradually expanding to support broader areas.

Future Prospects

This initiative aligns with Iraq’s broader goals of enhancing energy security, reducing reliance on imports, and improving the reliability of electricity delivery to its citizens.

The partnership with Jordan signals Iraq’s commitment to exploring regional collaborations to tackle its long-standing energy crisis. As the line’s capacity increases, it promises to bring much-needed stability to areas that have endured years of insufficient power supply.
