Lebanon (Transatlantic Today) – In a controversial statement, Israeli Army spokesman Daniel Hagari declared that the notion of eradicating Hamas is a “deception to the public.” Hagari stressed that Hamas is an ideology, not just a military force, suggesting that its complete elimination is unrealistic without a viable alternative for governance in Gaza.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Destroy Hamas

According to France24, The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, promptly responded to Hagari’s remarks. Netanyahu’s office reiterated that dismantling Hamas’s military and governance capabilities remains a central goal of their ongoing campaign in Gaza. Despite the internal disagreements, Israeli troops continue their offensive operations, targeting Hamas infrastructure and personnel.

Diverging Views Within the Military and Government

Hagari’s interview with Channel 13 highlighted a growing rift between Israel’s military leaders and its government officials. He criticized the idea of destroying Hamas without ensuring a post-conflict governance plan for Gaza. The Army later clarified Hagari’s comments, stating they were focused on the ideological aspect of Hamas, not its physical presence.

Continued Conflict in Gaza and Rising Casualties

Amidst the internal political strife, Israeli forces persist in their ground invasion of Rafah and airstrikes on refugee camps in Gaza. The bombings have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, with the Palestinian Ministry of Health reporting significant fatalities and injuries. The Israeli Army maintains that their operations are precision strikes against Hamas fighters and infrastructure.

 Strained Relations and Tactical Disagreements

Tensions between Netanyahu’s administration and military leaders have surfaced repeatedly, especially after Hagari’s previous calls for a strategic reassessment and humanitarian pauses. Netanyahu has defended his decisions, emphasizing the need to dismantle Hamas despite opposition from military commanders.

Growing Clashes with Hezbollah in Lebanon

Amid crossfire with the Lebanese militia, Israel leads a campaign of targeted attacks against vehicles in Lebanon. The recent Israeli attack led to the murder of  a Hezbollah member which highlights the rising tensions and the outbreak of a wider conflict in the region.

As the situation in Gaza and on Israel’s borders evolves, internal disagreements within the Israeli leadership and ongoing military operations continue to determine the course of the conflict.
