France and Germany call for unity on European security and increased defense spending amid Trump’s win.

France and Germany emphasized the need to maintain military spending and unity on European security, especially with the U.K., following a meeting between their defense ministers in response to Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

How can NATO demonstrate its military strength?

NATO members must turn defense spending into tangible contributions, including troops, ships, and aircraft, that demonstrate to their citizens that the alliance is a military force, not just a political one. French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu highlighted this in a press briefing with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius after their meeting in Paris on Wednesday.

What role will Europe play in global multilateralism?

During his first term, Trump frequently criticized European countries for not spending enough on defense and for taking advantage of U.S. military power. At a campaign rally in February, he expressed he would encourage Russia to “do whatever they hell they want” to NATO members that didn’t meet their financial obligations to the alliance.

Which countries are central to Europe’s defense cooperation?

“The question of multilateralism is at stake, the question of how we as Europeans position ourselves in this world order,” said Pistorius. He emphasized the importance of European unity in maximizing defense strength. He also mentioned that Poland, as NATO’s largest country in Eastern Europe, has a significant role to play, and that the U.K. and Italy should also be included in defense cooperation. A meeting of the five countries will be held in Berlin in the coming weeks.

Can Europe maintain strong ties with the U.S.?

While the U.S. remains an important partner, Pistorius stressed that Europe must stick together to tackle shared geopolitical challenges, such as international law, free trade, and security. The EU and U.S. have aligned interests, and their cooperation is vital in addressing these challenges.

What challenges face France’s defense spending plans?

The call for unity comes during a challenging time for both France and Germany. France recently held snap elections, resulting in a parliament without a majority, and a government without a clear mandate, which has nevertheless announced billions of euros in spending cuts to curb its budget deficit. Lecornu emphasized the necessity of France’s defense spending plan for 2024-2030, regardless of the country’s domestic political struggles.

How does Germany’s political turmoil affect defense priorities?

In Germany, the governing coalition collapsed as Chancellor Olaf Scholz sought to oust Finance Minister Christian Lindner due to disagreements over emergency spending. Despite this internal turmoil, Pistorius reiterated the importance of continued defense investment, especially given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

What impact will Trump’s presidency have on Ukraine’s defense?

Trump’s anticipated victory raises concerns about U.S. support for Ukraine, with the incoming president being skeptical about continued assistance for the country’s defense against Russia. European leaders and defense analysts are anxious about how to prevent a Ukrainian defeat should Trump reduce aid.

What should NATO focus on to support Ukraine?

The war in Ukraine shows that Europe cannot afford gaps in its defense capabilities. Pistorius stressed that Europe must remain committed to supporting Ukraine, as the military situation remains challenging. Defense experts worry that without continued U.S. support, NATO will need to step up its role, and European nations may need to take on more responsibility to prevent Ukraine’s defeat.

How will Europe strengthen its defense industries?

Lecornu emphasized that Europe must increase its defense spending, not only to enhance military capabilities but also to protect its defense industries. He called for continued re-armament as a vital first step in ensuring Europe can defend itself effectively.
