Philippines(Washington Insider Magazine) – The Philippines’ decision to purchase the United States’ Typhon missile system has drawn sharp criticism from China, which warns that the move could trigger an arms race in the Asia-Pacific region. The announcement came from Philippine military chief Lieutenant-General Roy Galido, who emphasized that the acquisition was aimed at “protecting our sovereignty.”

The Typhon missile system, a mid-range weapon already deployed by the U.S. Army for joint military exercises, has a range of 480km (300 miles), with a longer-range version in development. The system would allow the Philippine military to project force outward up to 370km (200 nautical miles), aligning with the country’s maritime entitlements under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

In response, China condemned the decision as a “provocative and dangerous move,” with Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning labeling it “extremely irresponsible” for regional security. China, which claims nearly the entire South China Sea, has ramped up military activity in disputed waters, often leading to confrontations with the Philippines.

Galido dismissed China’s criticism, asserting that the country had no intention of going beyond its national interests. While the acquisition has not yet been budgeted for 2025, it is expected to take two or more years to complete the purchase of the new weapons system.
