Best Places to See in the U.S. This Fall

U.S (Washington Insider Magazine) -With the leaves beginning to change colors and a crisp cold front starting to set in, the fall season has finally arrived. We’ve been cooped up inside for so long between COVID shutdowns and working from home, and it’s time for a long weekend getaway or a weeklong vacation. Whether you decide to retreat into America’s beautiful natural landscapes or hit the coast for more sunshine, fall is the best time to see some of the United States’ most popular destinations. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best places to visit in the United States for a festive fall adventure:

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Nature lovers can rejoice at the outstanding fall foliage in the Great Smoky Mountains. No matter when you visit in the fall, the foliage sweeps across the mountain vistas for a picture-perfect view. Hike through the beloved trails of the park to witness cascading waterfalls and take in the fresh air of the mountain range.

If you’re more into cityscapes and indoor activities, head to the neighboring city of Gatlinburg! Grab a pint of beer at the Smoky Mountain Brewery or walk across the Gatlinburg Skybridge, the largest pedestrian skybridge in the country.

Salem, Massachusetts

Nothing says fall quite like an experience with the supernatural. In addition to Salem having beautiful fall leaves and a cool breeze, the small town is packed with a history of witches, lost seamen, and their unfortunate fates. Witness authentic witch trial documents at the Peabody Essex Museum or embark on a tour of the city to learn more about its past. Either way, you’re in for a treat in Salem.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is well known for its vast display of fall foliage and color changing leaves; some even say they have the best views for leaf peeping in the country. Aside from outdoor adventures into the colors of fall, Asheville hosts many fall festivals in October and November where you can buy local art, produce, gifts, and more.

Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes region of New York has exploded in popularity over the past year due to the diverse array of activities that are possible, from hiking the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail to vineyard visits and quaint B&Bs. The region is well known for its vineyards and wineries, as well as “leaf peeping” around mid-October. Head to Watkins Glen State Park for stunning views of cascading waterfalls amidst the fall leaves all around you.

Portland, Maine

To beat the bitter cold of a New England winter, head to Portland, ME in October and early November for gorgeous fall weather. Hike through Bradsbury Mountain or hop on a boat in the Casco Bay to witness some of the best fall foliage in the country and cap off your day by trying fresh seafood in downtown Portland. We also recommend you do a brewery tour at one of the many breweries in town. Trust us, it’s worth it.
