AI Boom Strains Power Grids

USA (Washington Insider Magazine)— In the expansive “data center avenue” of northern Virginia, covering 45 square kilometers, the surge in using artificial intelligence (AI) is driving up electricity usage. At one point in 2022, service to new centres had to be temporarily halted due to the strain on resources. Efforts to use diesel generators during outages faced community opposition, leading to their abandonment by Virginia environmental regulators.

Energy Intensiveness of AI

Across the United States, the proliferation of data centers, powered by AI technology, is catching utilities and regulators off guard. Estimates suggest that North American data centers alone could triple electricity consumption levels from 2022 to 390 terawatt hours by the end of the decade. This surge in demand is challenging existing infrastructure and forecasting models.

Implications for Power Grids

The unexpected rise in electricity demand is forcing electricity companies to reassess their projections and infrastructure plans. Factors contributing to this demand include not only data centers but also initiatives to promote green industries like electric vehicle and semiconductor production. The strain on the power grid raised concerns about possible blackouts and the need for substantial investments in transmission infrastructure.

Challenges and Responses

According to Cronista,  addressing these challenges needs some electricity companies to reconsider plans for fossil fuel-based plants, while others seek approval for new gas plants. However, this may conflict with efforts to promote green energy and reduce emissions. Without significant investments in power generation and transmission infrastructure, the risk of blackouts looms large, potentially hindering economic growth and adaptation to evolving energy needs.

Virginia’s Data Center Expansion

Virginia, home to a significant concentration of data centers, has experienced a rapid increase in demand, especially during the pandemic-driven shift to virtual activities. Dominion Energy Inc. had to temporarily halt new connections in response to the strain on resources. However, after accelerating transmission projects, service connections have been restored, enabling continued growth in the data center sector.
